“Now is the Time”

“The Victim curses the wind.   The Survivor waits for it to change.   The Navigator adjusts the sails.   You have to take it as it happens, but you should try to make it happen the way you want to take it.”     (German Proverb)

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.   So throw off the bowlines.   Sail away from the safe harbor.   Catch the trade winds in your sails.   Explore.   Dream.  Discover.”    (Mark Twain)

“Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season.   It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year.   It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow.   Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow comes the harvest and the playtime.”    (W. E. B. Du Bois)

Our Eyes and Miracles

“The eye with which I see God is the same eye with which God sees me.”     (Meister Eckhart)

“What is behind your eyes holds more power than what is in front of them.”     (“Thoughts from the Seat of the Soul” by Gary Zukav)

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”     (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

“Miracles … seem to me to rest not so much upon faces or voices or healing power coming suddenly near to us from afar off, but upon our perceptions being made finer, so that for a moment our eyes can see and our ears can hear what is there about us always.”    (Death Comes for the Archbishop, Willa Cather)

“It Is Up to Me”

“Each morning I wake up and say to myself, Jerry, you have two choices today:  you can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.   I choose to be in a good mood.

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it.  I choose to learn from it.   Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life.   I choose the positive side of life.

Life is all about choices.   When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice.   You choose how you react to situations.   You choose how people will affect your mood.   You choose to be in a good mood or a bad mood.   The bottom line: it’s your choice how you live life.       (Jerry, a friend of Harvey Mackay, ‘Bottom line: your choice how to live’ by Harvey Mackay)

“Marcia Martin said, “‘What I point out to people is that it’s silly to be afraid that you’re not going to get what you want if you ask.   Because you are already not getting what you want … without asking, you already have failed, you already have nothing.   What are you afraid of?’

The next step is to ask yourself, ‘If I ask for this thing, what is the best that could happen?’   Wow!   Think about it!   You could actually get what you ask for—perhaps even more.”        (The Aladdin Factor, Jack Canfield & Mark V. Hanson)

“Perhaps the ten most important two-letter words ever put together:    If it is to be, it is up to me.”      (Unknown Author)

“Do You Deserve It?”

“There are three kinds of people:

1)  the ones that learn by reading,

2) the few who learn by observation,

3) the rest who have to pee on the electric fence.”

(Will Rogers, American humorist)

“Choose your glasses very carefully.   A few years ago I ran into an old acquaintance that I hadn’t seen for awhile.   Our short conversation confirmed just why I hadn’t seen him in awhile – and wouldn’t see him again soon if I could help it.   I started off with, “Hey Phil.  How’s it going?”  His response was, “Oh, you know; same crap, different day.”   His expletive-laced language was much spicier than that, but you get the picture.   He then proceeded to proudly pile up the most recent crap in his life and invited me to wallow in it with him.

Our world does have an abundance of crap.   There’s lots of injustice, inequality, and unfairness.  The crap that hits the fan in life is often not evenly distributed.   But we get to decide whether to stand in it or not.   We decide if we want today to be crappy or happy.   If we walk around with our “crap glasses” on, we’ll see lots of it.   The more crap we look for, the more crap we see.   The more crap we see, the more we look for.   My friend, fellow performance improvement author/speaker, and psychologist, Peter Jensen calls this ‘opticalrectumitis,’ which he loosely translates as ‘having a shi… (crappy) outlook on life.’ ”    (Jim Clemmer)

“Do you deserve it?   Do you deserve the luck you’ve been handed?   The place you were born, the education you were given, the job you’ve got?   Do you deserve your tribe, your customer base, your brand?   Not at all.   “Deserve” is such a loaded word.   The question shouldn’t be, “do you deserve it.”   I think it should be, “what are you going to do with it now that you’ve got it?”     (Seth Godin)

“What We Are in Potentiality”

“One doesn’t discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.”    (Andre Gide)

“He who knows much about others may be learned, but he who understands himself is more intelligent.   He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still.”    (Lao-Tsu)

“We are not in a position in which we have nothing to work with.   We already have a start; we already have capacities, talents, direction, missions, callings.   The job is, if we are willing to take it seriously, to help ourselves to be more perfectly what we already are, to be more full, more actualizing, more realizing, in fact, what we are in potentiality.”     (Abraham Maslow, The Farthest Reaches of Human Nature

“Success in a Nanosecond”

“Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to make important changes in our lives.   Any day we wish; we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge.   We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

We can also do nothing.  We can pretend rather than perform.   And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are.   The choices are ours to make.   But while we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause.

We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today.   We cannot allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day, to lead us down the wrong path.   We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in how our life works out.   And then we must make the very choices that will bring life, happiness and joy into our daily lives.

And if I may be so bold to offer my last piece of advice for someone seeking and needing to make changes in their life – If you don’t like how things are, change it!   You have the ability to totally transform every area in your life – and it all begins with your very own power of choice.”     (Jim Rohn)

“One of the most common things I hear is, ‘I’d like to do something remarkable like that …, but my xyz won’t let me; where xyz  =  my boss, my publisher, my partner, my licensor, my franchisor, etc.    Well, you can fail by going along with that and not doing it, or you can do it, cause a ruckus and work things out later.

In my experience, once it’s clear you’re willing (not just willing, but itching, moving, and yes, implementing) without them, things start to happen.   People are rarely willing to step up and stop you, and often just waiting to follow someone crazy enough to actually do something.     I’m going.    Come along if you like.”     (Seth Godin)

“You can be as successful as you wish the nanosecond you decide you will not settle for anything less.”     (Tom Peters)

“Why Not Be Great?”

“Dreams are really the thoughts that you have hidden in your heart.   When you start a brand new day, let your heart show you the way and make a dream or two come true.”    (‘Land of Make Believe’ by Chuck Mangione)

“You can choose beliefs that limit you, or you can choose beliefs that support you.”    (Anthony Robbins)

“The thing is, we still live in a world that’s filled with opportunity.   In fact, we have more than an opportunity – we have an obligation.   An obligation to spend our time doing great things.   To take risks and to make the world better by being amazing.   You get to make a choice.   You can remake that choice every day, in fact.   It’s never too late to choose optimism, to choose action, to choose excellence.   The best thing is that it only takes a moment — just one second — to decide.  …  you have the power to change everything that’s to come.   And you can do that by asking yourself (and your colleagues) the one question that every organization and every individual needs to ask today:      Why not be great?”    (Seth Godin, Fast Company, June 2003)

“It’s Fun To Do the Impossible”

“You’re good, but you’re going to be great.  You’re the best, but you’re going to get better.   Sometimes the paths we take are long and hard, but remember:  those are always the ones that lead to the most beautiful views.  Challenges come along, inevitably; how you respond to them determines who you are deep down inside – and everything you’re going to be.   Increase the chances of reaching your goals by working at them gradually.  The very best you can do is all that is asked of you.  Realize that you are capable of working miracles of your own making.  Remember that opportunities have a reason for knocking on your door, and the right ones are there for the taking.  You don’t always have to win, but you do need to know what it takes to be a winner.  It’s up to you to find the key that unlocks the door to a more fulfilling life.  Understand that increased difficulty brings you nearer to the truth of how to survive it – and get beyond it.  Cross your bridges.  Meet your challenges.  Reach out for your dreams, and bring them closer and closer to your heart.   Get rid of the “if only’s,” and get on with whatever you need to do to get things right.   Go after what you want in life, with all the blessings of all the people who care about you.   And find out what making your wishes come true really feels like.”     (Unknown)

“If we did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.”    (Thomas A. Edison)

“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”    (Walt Disney)

Whenever you are faced with a challenge or you believe that something is impossible, think of the words above and you will rise above your challenges.    ~  GMUniverse

“If You Can Dream It …”

“Our ordinary mind always tries to persuade us that we are nothing but acorns and that our greatest happiness will be to become bigger, fatter, shinier acorns; but that is of interest only to pigs.   Our faith gives us knowledge of something much better:   that we can become oak trees.”            (E. F. Schumacher)

“We are what we think.

All that we are arises with our thoughts.

With our thoughts, we make the world.”    (The Buddha)

“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it.

If you can dream it, you can become it.”   (William Arthur Ward)

Open your eyes and realize what you can do.  To repeat a quote stated in an earlier post, “Control your own destiny or someone else will.”  (Jack Welch)

Whether it is at work or at home, you have the power inside of you to determine what you can do positively and not let outside negative forces stop you.   Use that power wisely or as a great ‘philosopher’ once said “Use the Force, Luke.”      ~  GMUniverse

THINK and Make It Happen!

It’s early in the morning and you are just arriving at work.   You get to your office or your workstation and you begin thinking, “How in the heck am I supposed to feel good, be motivated and do a good job when it seems that everything around me is going bad?   There are too many changes going on in the company, there are issues at home, the economy is topsy-turvy, and there are some things that I just don’t understand!”   With all those thoughts in your head, your mind begins spinning and you feel woozy, and then all of a sudden …

(Background music begins … harp playing … a dream-like state begins)

… you find yourself sitting on a chair in the middle of a large room.  You see a line of people coming towards you.  You can’t move.  As a key floats down to you, you hear a booming voice that says, “Do not worry; you already have the keys to your success.”   Then, one by one, each person in line comes to you, gives you a key and says:

“Change your thoughts and you change the world.   How you think about a problem is more important than the problem itself – so always think positively.”     (Norman Vincent Peale)

“Make no small plans for they have no power to stir the soul.”     (Niccolo Machiavelli)

“There are no secrets to success.   It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”     (Colin Powell)

“Trust is enormously powerful in a corporation.   The only way I know how to create that kind of trust is by laying out your values and then walking the talk.  You’ve got to do what you say you’ll do, consistently, over time.”     (Jack Welch)

“We have a ‘strategic’ plan.   It’s called doing things.”     (Herb Kelleher)

“Essentially there are two actions in life  –  performance and excuses.   Make a decision as to which you will accept for yourself.”     (Stephen Brown)

“In the last analysis, what we are communicates far more eloquently that anything we say or do.”     (Stephen Covey)

And then poof! ….   All of a sudden, you begin to wake up, your mind becomes clearer and you look around your work area and realize it was all a dream.   Or was it?   “But it made sense,” you say.   “I’ve heard those sayings before but I never paid too much attention to them.   Could those statements be some of the keys to success?”

It’s now become clear to you that, in order to be successful and create a positive and fun environment at work, (and at home), it all begins with youthe way you perceive events or issues, and the image you project to your employees, your costumers, your friends and your family.   As you go back to work, you can’t help but start singing James Brown’s song, “I Feel Good!”

Now, what can YOU do to “think and make it happen?”      ~  GMUniverse
