“When you’re touched by magic, nothing’s ever quite the same again.  What really makes me sad is all those people who never have the chance to know that touch.  They’re too busy, or they just don’t hold with make-believe, so they shut the door without really knowing it was there to be opened in the first place.”   (Charles de Lint, What the Mouse Found and Other Stories)

“Life – Stop Thinking About It and Live It”

“A young couple moves into a new neighborhood.  The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside.  ‘That laundry is not very clean; she doesn’t know how to wash correctly.  Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.’ Her husband looks on, remaining silent.  Every time her neighbor hangs her wash to dry, the young woman makes the same comments.

A month later, the woman is surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and says to her husband:  ‘Look, she’s finally learned how to wash correctly.  I wonder who taught her this.’ The husband replies, ‘I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.’  And so it is with life …  What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look.”     (No-Exceptions.org)

______

“What have I learned?  Man, where to start.  I learned that I am much stronger than I thought I was.  I learned that there are parts of me that have been sleeping for a very long time, silent and secret parts that have been aching to be awakened.  I learned the fragility of life and the whisper’s breath that holds it balanced, I have learned the weight of that breath.  I found out that I need to be touched more than I ever thought, that the importance of being shown my worth in physical gestures is unbelievably large, much larger than being told.  I have learned what it feels like to not be able to stop smiling for reasons only you know; I found the places in me starting to wake up.  I have learned these things, and countless others, and I have learned that it is a scary thing to let yourself learn … it is a very frightening thing to allow yourself to wake up, those silent aching parts asleep so long.”   (Tyler Knott Gregson)

“Life’s Ladder”

Unto each mortal who comes to earth

A ladder is given by God at birth,

And up this ladder the soul must go,

Step by step, from the valley below;

Step by step to the center of space

On this ladder of lives to the starting place.

In time departed, which yet endures,

I shaped my ladder and you shaped yours,

Whatever they are, they are what we made,

A ladder of light or a ladder of shade;

A ladder of love or a hateful thing,

A ladder of strength or a wavering string,

A ladder of gold or a ladder of straw–

Each is the ladder of righteous law.

In useless effort, then, waste no time;

Rebuild your ladder, and climb and climb.

And climb and climb.”   (Ella Wheeler Wilcox)

“Realize that true happiness lies within you.  Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. “The opposite of ‘why’ is now.

Questions are good.  A legitimate, ‘why?’ is enough to change the world.

But stalling, stalling is the last thing you need.  And ‘why’ is often an escape hatch for people who know what they should do, but fear doing it.  It’s easier to ponder, to question the meaning of this or our role in where we go next.

The best answer for the stalling why’ is: ‘Go.’

[and of course, the best response to the impetuous, status-quo driven ‘Go’ is to ask, ‘why?’]”   (Seth Godin, Seth’s Blog 2.26.14)

“Remember the Alamo”

This post will be different than what I have posted before; however, it does contain quotes on courage, commitment, inspiration and a feeling that we Texans have about our place in the world.  People may see us as arrogant at times but it comes from our history, the fact that we were a country before we joined the Union and fortunately or unfortunately we keep hearing it over and over as we grow up.  At the same time, we take care of our neighbors, hold strong values and raise our children to be the best they can be.  Being a Texan and living in an Antonio, I decided to point out the courage, bravery and inspiration at the Battle of the Alamo.

Many people throughout the world have heard of The Alamo located in San Antonio, Texas.  During a rebellion against Mexico, this Spanish mission was manned by close to 200 defenders comprised of U. S. settlers who had come to Texas and native Texans who were Mexican nationals, referred to as Tejanos. This mission became a major battle ground in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico in 1836.

Today, March 6, is the anniversary of the last day of battle in 1836 in which The Alamo fell under the military forces of Mexico’s General and President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.  All of the defenders at the Alamo died but the cry “Remember the Alamo” became a rallying cry for Texans as they continued the battle for independence.

Before the Alamo fell on March 6, Lieutenant Colonel William Barrett Travis wrote and sent the following letter on February 24, 1836 to General Sam Houston for reinforcements as well as stating his commitment to defend The Alamo.      (APena)

“Commandancy of the The Alamo

Bejar, Feby. 24th. 1836

To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World—

Fellow Citizens & compatriots—

I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna — I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man — The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken — I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls — I shall never surrender or retreat.  Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch — The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days.  If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country – Victory or Death.

William Barrett Travis.

Lt.  Col. comdt.

P. S.  The Lord is on our side — When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn — We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels and got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves.”

A quote about Texas and Texans:

“I like Texas and Texans.  In Texas, everything is bigger.  When Texans win, they win big.  And when they lose, it’s spectacular.

If you really want to learn the attitude of how to handle risk, losing and failure, go to San Antonio and visit the Alamo.  The Alamo is a great story of brave people who chose to fight, knowing there was no hope of success against overwhelming odds. They chose to die instead of surrendering.  It’s an inspiring story worthy of study; nonetheless, it’s still a tragic military defeat.  They got their butts kicked.  A failure if you will.  They lost.  So how do Texans handle failure?  They still shout, “Remember the Alamo!”

That’s why I like Texans so much.  They took a great failure and turned it into a tourist destination that makes them millions.

Texans don’t bury their failures.  They get inspired by them.  They take their failures and turn them into rallying cries.  Failure inspires Texans to become winners.  But that formula is not just the formula for Texans.  It is formula for all winners.”   (Robert T. Kiyosaki, Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Children About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Don’t)

“Visualize, Change Your Thoughts, Do the Impossible”

“Okay, here’s the skinny.  The answer to your question.  The way, the light, the door.  The most overlooked truth in reality.  And the one that requires the most “uncommon sense” to fully grasp:

When it comes to effecting change (big or little, but especially big), manifesting the life of your dreams, or getting that perfect parking space, “thinking” is immeasurably more valuable when used to imagine what you want – the end result – than to figure out how you’re going to get it.

Visualize.  Every single day.

(Signed)    The Universe”   (Mike Dooley, ‘Notes from the Universe, March 3, 2014)

“For most of us it’s a radical opinion, at least initially, to believe that our problems can be relinquished at will.  After all, they seem so integral to all the experiences we’re having.  Indeed they are; however, our experiences mirror our thoughts about ourselves and the people we’re with.  Problems thus lie with our perceptions.

Being told that we can change our lives by changing our minds seems simplistic.  The events that involve us appear far too complicated for such an easy solution.  But until we earnestly try to change our minds, we’ll not understand the power we garner at the blink of an eye.  … If we want to see something, in fact anything, differently, all we need to do is ask … for a better vision of the circumstance.  One will come to us.”   (Daily Meditations for Practicing The Course, Karen Casey)

“Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season.  It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year.  It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow.  Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow comes the harvest and the playtime.”   (W. ______

“No matter how intelligent or able you may be, if you don’t have a sense of urgency, now is the time to start developing it.  The world is full of very competent people who honestly intend to do things tomorrow, as soon as they can get around to it.  Their accomplishments, however, seldom match those of the less talented who are blessed with a sense of the importance of getting started now.”   (Bits & Pieces)

“Choose action, not rest.  Choose truth, not fantasy.  Choose a smile, not a frown.  Choose love, not animosity.  Choose the good life in all things, and choose the opportunity as well as the chance to work when springtime smiles on your life.

Much of the effort and opportunity of springtime rests in the depth and degree of our faith.  Life provides no assurance that the planting of seeds will provide the reaping of crops.  We have only the demonstrated experiences of others to draw upon.  The storms of life could cancel our efforts expended in the fields of opportunity.  But to expend no effort during the spring will assure no results during the fall.”   (Jim Rohn, Seasons of Life)

“Have You Exhausted All Possibilities? Raise the Bar”

“Some people have called feedback the breakfast of champions.  But it isn’t the breakfast, it’s the lunch.  Vision is the breakfast.  Self-correction the dinner.”   (Stephen R. Covey, First Things First)

“Successful and unsuccessful people do not vary greatly in their abilities. They vary in their desires to reach their potential.”   (John Maxwell)

______

Some people I know work hard to lower the bar at work.

That was my strategy at gym class in high school.  Not only did I do the minimum amount permitted, I worked hard to do just a little bit less than that. By the time the semester was over, the teacher was relieved if I even bothered to show up at all.

Most people seek to meet the bar.  They figure out what’s expected, and do that.

A few people, very few, work to relentlessly raise the bar.  She’s the one who over delivers on projects, shows up ahead of schedule, instigates, suggests and pushes.

Raising the bar is exhausting, no doubt about it.  I’m not sure the people who engage in this apparently reckless behavior would have it any other way, though.  They get to experience a fundamentally different day, a different journey and a different reputation than everyone else.

[Why now? What has changed that makes promoting bar gymnastics more than a selfish effort by the boss to get more labor out of the workforce?

Simple.  This is the post-industrial era.  Success is not about speeding up the assembly line as much as it relies on individuals able to create leaps forward.  The person capable of doing that sort of work is in far higher demand than ever before.]”   (Seth Godin)

“Know Yourself and Be Better”

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”   (Aristotle)

______

“There are and will be times in our lives when our self-esteem will be called up and challenged.  Such times are critical opportunities.  They are structured so that who we are in terms of the vital themes of competence and worthiness are put in our hands in a way that can lead to either their increase or decrease.  Additionally, such an outcome depends largely on the degree of work, (i. e., struggle and awareness) that one does.  When the three factors – vulnerability, possibility and work – are taken up together, they constitute the underlying hope of self-esteem.”   (Dr. Chris Mruk)

______

“A speaker began a seminar, pulling a crisp, new bill from his pocket, and asked, ‘Who would like this $20 bill?’

Hands started going up.  He said, ‘I’m going to give this $20 bill to one of you, but first let me do this.’  He proceeded to crumple up the bill.  He then asked, ‘Who still wants it?’  Still the hands were up in the air.

‘Well,’ he replied, ‘what if I do this?’  He dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor, so now the bill was not only crumpled, but also dirty.  ‘Now who still wants it?’  Still the hands went into the air.

‘My friends, you have all learned a valuable lesson.  No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value.  It was still worth $20.  Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way.  We feel as though we are worthless.  But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value in the eyes of those who love you.  You are special – don’t ever forget it.’”  ( Anonymous)
